Years ago, cameras used to have something called ‘film’ inside them. You’d take pictures, then you’d need to go to a chemist with this film, and a few days later they would give you your pictures. Nothing like today, but some people still think that they took better pictures!
You can actually make a film camera with common household items. With a matchbox and certain other items, you can make a Pinhole camera that can take real film photographs. Unlike commercially sold cameras, a pinhole camera doesn’t have a lens and only has a small aperture (a pinhole). So yes, you can’t go on automatic mode when using it. Still, if you do things right, you might just be able to take amazing photos with it.
After you’ve taken some photos with this camera, you’ll need to go old-style to a chemist to get the pictures printed. Ask your parents if you don’t know how.
This activity involves cutting a drink can and using scissors, so please check in with your parents before doing it.
